- Evolving from the SGR
Congress needed a path to move past the sustainable growth rate (SGR). The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) did that with two options: the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) and advanced Alternative Payment Models (aAPMs). Scroll down for some quick facts and to watch the video. After watching the video, you will complete the lesson.
The sustainable growth rate (SGR) was first adopted in 1997.
Annual Medicare Update
For clinicians to get a market basket update starting in 2019 (on 2017 MIPS performance data), clinicians must choose to participate in MIPS or an aAPM.
Based on calculations performed by SCG Health, the MIPS update will not make up for the ongoing cuts to Medicare. The only way to keep up with medical inflation is to participate in an advanced Alternative Payment Model (aAPM).
